IR Sumo Start Module
What is the IR Sumo Start Module?
The IR Sumo Start Module is a reliable infrared receiver that detects NEC-protocol IR signals—ideal for sumo robot competitions. When triggered by a compatible remote, it outputs a digital HIGH pulse to start your robot. A simple yet effective solution for synchronized match starts.
Key Features of the IR Sumo Start Module
- Compatible with NEC IR protocol (standard in many TV remotes)
- Outputs a clean 5V HIGH pulse upon IR signal detection
- 3-pin header: VCC, GND, and OUT
- Integrated LED indicator for signal feedback
- Compact PCB size, easy to connect to microcontrollers

How the IR Sumo Start Module Works
Once a NEC-compatible IR remote signal is received, the module sends a brief HIGH pulse to the output pin. This signal can be read by a robot controller (e.g., Arduino or URC10) to begin match logic, enabling fair and simultaneous starts for all competing robots.
How to Connect the IR Sumo Start Module
- VCC → 5V from your microcontroller
- GND → Ground (GND)
- OUT → Digital input pin (e.g., D2)
Applications for the IR Sumo Start Module
- Start trigger for sumo robot competitions
- Synchronized robot start system for team robotics
- Custom robotics game start signals
- NEC IR signal detection projects
